A UK couple moved to Thailand and significantly reduced their living costs while improving their work-life balance. Roshni Ward, 30, and her fiancé Louis Hunt, 33, relocated from Rye, East Sussex, to Chiang Mai in September 2024 after feeling burned out by long working hours and high expenses.

Roshni Ward and her fiancé, Louis Hunt, left the UK due to long working hours and the high cost of living.

Before the move, both were working full-time jobs that left little room for rest. Roshni worked as a corporate team leader in broadband sales and often did overtime, including weekends. Louis, a carpenter, regularly faced 11-hour workdays, including his commute.

By the weekend, they said they were too exhausted to enjoy their time off. They also expressed concern about safety and were frustrated by the overall cost of living in the UK. After a visit to Thailand in December 2024, they began seriously considering relocation. When their lease ended, they decided to make the move.

Since moving to Chiang Mai, their monthly expenses have dropped sharply across nearly every category. Their rent fell from about $1,700 in the UK to $380 in Thailand, where they now live in a condo that includes a gym, pool, and co-working space. Their monthly water bill dropped from around $95 to just $3.45, while electricity costs decreased from roughly $375 to $55, even with regular air conditioning use.

Transport expenses also went down significantly. Instead of spending about $119 on car-related costs, they now spend between $38 and $75 using taxis. Food costs are another major difference. A meal out that would cost around $75 in the UK now costs about $10 for two people in Thailand.

Overall, these changes mean the couple saves more than $1,250 each month on rent alone, along with additional savings on everyday expenses.

They also benefit from lower daily costs. A 20-minute taxi ride costs around $1.90, and takeaways are typically priced between $1.90 and $2.50.

The couple experienced lifestyle changes in Thailand, including flexible work hours and more time for leisure.

To make the move possible, both changed careers. Roshni now works as a content creator, while Louis works as an online fitness coach. Their ability to work remotely allows them to earn income from international clients while living in a lower-cost country.

They also pay about $138 per month for expat health insurance, which they include in their regular expenses.

Beyond financial savings, the couple says their daily routine has improved. They now have more flexible schedules, allowing them to start work later in the day. Mornings are often spent resting, going to the gym, or swimming.

They also noted differences in daily life. In Chiang Mai, shops and restaurants stay open later, making it easier to balance work with social activities. Louis can take late-night work calls and still go out afterward.

The couple regularly visits temples, waterfalls, and elephant sanctuaries, and says the local community is welcoming and helpful. Chiang Mai also has a large international expat population, making it easier to meet people.

While most expenses are lower, some imported goods cost more. For example, British items like Bisto gravy granules can cost around $6.25 due to import fees.

The couple says they are happy with their decision and are considering staying long-term. They believe the lower cost of living, combined with a slower pace of life, has made a noticeable difference to their overall well-being.
