6 The Catacombs of Paris

The origin of the Catacombs of Paris has been an unsolved mystery since the unearthing of the place. It is an extensive network of tunnels that spans over 300 km. It has the remains of almost 6 million humans stacked and arranged. The place is occupied with tunnels that are restricted because of the unknown contents and disturbing stories of old explorers.

This gigantic city on stilts is a complex network. Millions of years ago, Paris was part of the tropical sea. Dozens of meters of sediment build up the limestone and are still visible.

The catacombs are part of old Paris where mining was undertaken for retrieving limestone needed for building homes.

The catacombs are a part of quarries. They are 20 meters deep and have a length of a 5-story building. The place is more than a catacomb with remains of more than 6 million people which were moved here after tombs were closed for health reasons.

The catacombs were open since 1775 for tourists and still, only a tiny part of the catacombs is open for the public. (Source)

7 UFO sightings in Chile

UFO sightings have been kept confidential for years, but recently, the US government has made these reports unclassified. The majority of it is 144 entries by the U.S Naval forces about sighting strange aerial phenomena. The whole world is interested in the series of unsolved mysteries surrounding this place. Researchers are still trying to associate it with extraterrestrial life. 

Chile, with its pristine skies, has been an interesting space for astronomy observations throughout past decades. It is believed that pre-Columbian civilizations had contact with civilizations outside this land.  

In 1997, a committee was created to observe the aerial anomalies. Numerous cases of sightings lead to the committee getting case studies from reports by commercial, institutional, and the ordinary public.

The main objective is to safeguard the airspace and educate the community about the myths and reality. Chile was listed as one of the top 10 places to hunt for UFOs. (Source)

8 Kawah Ijen Lake (Indonesia)

Kawah Ijen Lake is a dangerous and mysterious place in Indonesia where sulfur combusts with air and produces a blue-lava-like river. Hazardous sulfur mining happens in this area. The paths are steep and not safe to travel. A series of explosions around 50,000 years ago might be the cause for this phenomenon as found by scientists. 

This largely acidic lake emits blue flames. Kawah Ijen Lake in Indonesia is known for two phenomena. The first is an active volcano-like structure that emits flammable sulfurous gas.

The second occurrence is the presence of turquoise-blue waters in a one-km stretch. The color is caused due to extreme acidity. It is the world’s highly acidic lake with 0.5 pH. 

This rare phenomenon has inspired as well as frightened humans for generations and still remains as one of the Earth’s unsolved mysteries with not much information. The phenomenon is believed to be caused because of sulphuric acid coming in contact with atmospheric gases at a temperature of more than 360 degrees. 

It is one of the most dangerous sulfur mining operations in the world. The area is steep and very difficult to travel to. To ease the process, mining companies have set up ceramic pipes to collect sulfur from the top of the mountain. This sulfur solidifies into sulfur mats where miners break and pack it up. (Source)

9 Nazca Lines in Peru

The Nazca Lines are geometric patterns of animal shapes found across the Peruvian desert which has led to many theories over the past years. They are believed to be geoglyphs with astronomical functions. There is a total of 800 straight lines; 70 are animal and plant designs. They are impossible to read at ground level. 

This place in Peru has been a subject of one of the most debated unsolved mysteries for the past 80 years. Persian archaeologist Toribio Mejja Xesspe studied these lines systematically.

First noticed by pilots flying over Peru in the 1930s, these lines sparked interest in American Professor Paul Kosok. He, after studying the lines, described them as the “largest astronomy book in the world.”  

Several theories surfaced as many rushed to Peru to study these glyphs. Some claimed that as the Nasca had very little access to water and rains, these lines pointed to where crops and water are still available.

Nasca only received 20 minutes of rain every year, and this seemed like a possible explanation to the lines. As studies progress, the researchers are sure that the understanding of these lines will be found. (Source)

10 Padmanabhaswamy Temple 

The temple is often in news for the secret vault named “B” which remains untouched as opening it is a daunting task. The officials found six chambers and opened one which revealed a chamber full of treasure. They are yet to find what lies beyond the first chamber that they managed to open. 

The Padmanabhaswamy Temple in South India is one of the richest shrines in the world with the recent findings of rare gems diamonds and gold found in one of the six secret chambers in the temple.

The place recently found its place on the list of unsolved mysteries with its secret treasures and unopened chambers. Traditionally known as the “Nilavara B,” the temple officials and the government have been trying to open these chambers. 

It has so far been impossible to open the B Chamber and it is unknown what to expect from it. To prevent looting and the treasure from ending up in the wrong hands, a lot of security has been put into place. People believe strongly that you can get cursed if you attempt to open it.

Several previous stories about snakes attacking and hearing the sound of waves on the other side of the door have made everyone stop the current explorations until the court and temple officials come to an agreement on what approach to take. (Source)
