Otto Frederick Rohwedder, from Iowa, invented the first single loaf bread-slicing machine. He began working on the machine in 1912 but it wasn't until about 1928, some 16 years later, that he had a fully working machine ready. By 1933, about 80% of the bread sold in the US was pre-sliced.
