It is not the first time that the Zelenskyy family is dealing with war. His grandfather, Semyon Ivanovych Zelenskyy, served in the Red Army in Russia during World War II. At that time, when many Nazis lost their lives in the Holocaust, Zelenskyy lost his great grandfather and many other relatives because of their Jewish origin. Growing up, he has heard many tales of the war and seen his family survive terrible tragedies. (Source)

The tensions escalated in 2021, with Russia launching a full-scale invasion in February 2022. Zelenskyy’s strategy was to calm the populace of his own country and assure in the NATO agreement that Ukraine was not seeking to retaliate.
