Cyclist Holds His Ground As Orlando Police Stops Him
A TikTok video uploaded on Tuesday, April 20, has gone viral, sparking widespread discussion online. The clip, which has been viewed over three million times, shows two Black cyclists being confronted at gunpoint by police officers in Orlando. The clip, labeled “What you think happened,” was shared by the user @riskie_e. It captures a tense moment when the men, riding their bicycles late Monday night at 11:47 p.m., were suddenly stopped by officers. The police drew their weapons and ordered them to lie on the ground, leaving the men visibly shaken and confused as they repeatedly asked what they had done wrong.
Despite proclaiming their innocence, the men complied with the officersâ commands. They laid on their stomachs and were later instructed to crawl toward the police vehicle.
Additional videos shared by @riskie_e provide a closer look at what happened afterward. In one recording, he challenges the officers about their actions, and one officer responds, ‘You are being held because you resemble the description of two individuals.’
Another video shows one of the men, who was wearing a GoPro, challenging the situation. He firmly stated his innocence and denied consent to any search or seizure.
âIâd really like to know whatâs going on here,â he said. âI didnât do anything wrong. I havenât committed a crime, and I donât consent to being searched. I just left 7-Eleven. Whatever description youâre referring to, itâs not me. This situation is violating my rights.â
He also invoked his Fifth Amendment right to remain silent but eventually handed over his passport when asked for identification. However, he refused to provide his home address, reiterating that he had done nothing wrong.
The men were eventually released after being detained for several hours and fingerprinted. Police confirmed they were not the suspects but explained that the cyclists matched the description of individuals wanted for a robbery.
According to a statement from Orlando Police Department spokesperson Autumn Jones, officers were investigating a robbery reported just 10 minutes before the incident. The victim had described the suspects as Black men with darker skin tones riding bicycles. Jones further stated that the officers drew their weapons because the suspects allegedly told the victim they were armed.
Jones clarified, âThe men were stopped near the location of the robbery as part of the investigative process to determine their involvement in the incident.â
Officers needed to confirm whether they were responsible for the crime.â The victim was later brought to the scene and verified that the two cyclists were not involved in the robbery.
After facing public scrutiny, the Orlando Police Department released body camera footage showing an officer apologizing to the detained men. âIâm sorry this happened, but you matched the description, which is why I acted the way I did,â the officer said.
One of the men replied, âAn apology doesnât make up for pointing a gun at me.â
The video drew widespread support on social media, with many expressing gratitude that the encounter did not lead to a worse outcome.
âThank goodness you were able to walk away from this. I hope you get justice for the trauma,â wrote one user.
Another remarked, âItâs painful to see you go through this. Thankfully, you captured it on video and made it through to share your experience.â
