66-Year-Old Woman Pleads Guilty After Traffic Stop Escalates
A 66-year-old woman has admitted guilt to multiple charges following a traffic stop last year.
On July 16, 2019, Debra Hamil was stopped by a Cashion police officer for driving with defective equipment, a violation typically leading to an $80 fine.
Authorities stated that Hamil refused to sign the ticket, rolled up her window, and drove away. The officer followed her vehicle for a short distance and eventually pulled her over in a parking lot.
Hamil refused to exit her vehicle, prompting the officer to pull her out. Once on the ground, she resisted the officer’s commands and reportedly kicked him. After this, the officer used a taser when she continued to resist by not putting her hands behind her back.
According to Kingfisher County court records, Hamil faced charges of assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, obstructing an officer, eluding an officer, and operating a vehicle with defective equipment.
Shortly after the arrest, Hamilâs lawyer, Ed Blau, released a statement criticizing the Cashion Police Department’s actions. He described the use of force against Hamil as unnecessary and offensive, particularly given her status as a 65-year-old woman and community member. Blau mentioned they were considering legal action to defend Hamilâs civil rights.
A year after her arrest, the case was resolved. Hamil pleaded guilty to resisting an officer, obstruction, eluding, and operating a vehicle with defective equipmentâeach charge a misdemeanor. In exchange, the state dropped the assault and battery charge.
Hamil was given a four-year deferred sentence and fined $50 for each charge.
