These 19 Seemingly Perfect Celebrities With Physical Imperfections Will Astound You
We, as a species that thrives exorbitantly – almost obscenely – on entertainment, are often wont to deify celebrities, often going to the extent of labeling them as “perfect.” And while the definition of “perfect” may be as subjective as it could get, we often tend to get blinded by the limelight focused on our beloved stars. To us, their perfection is absolute and uncompromised; we forget, very conveniently, that they are human and vulnerable to the same imperfections as other members of the species.
However, if you need any reminding, the following 19 celebrities with physical imperfections might nudge you a little in the direction of reality and away from blind hero worship; sure helped me!
1 Tina Fey – Facial scar
The star of 30 Rock, actress and writer Tina Fey has a faint scar on her left cheek – the result of a horrific attack at the age of 5, when, while she was playing in her front yard, a stranger approached her and cut her on the cheek. However, she barely let the experience, as well as its consequence, affect her until she was required to perform in front of the camera. Even today, she remains self-conscious of the scar, and is usually filmed from the right side.
2 Megan Fox – Misshapen thumbs
Considered by many and often hailed as being the most perfect/beautiful woman in the world, Megan Fox suffers from a condition called brachydactyly, which causes her thumbs to be misshapen and short, with wide nails. Both thumbs, however, function perfectly well.
3 Denzel Washington – Misshapen finger
While playing basketball as a child, Denzel Washington snapped the pinky finger of his right hand. It was never fixed, which led to the finger healing in a peculiar position, pointing outwards from his hand. It is still the same, even to this day.
4 Joaquin Phoenix – Facial scar
The scar near Joaquin Phoenix’s lip is often considered to be the result of cleft palate correction surgery. This, however, is not the case; he was born with the scar. It is a mild form of a cleft palate.
5 Gerard Butler – Uneven ear sizes
One of Gerard Butler’s ears juts out more than the other – the result of an ear surgery he had undergone as a child. However, Butler himself was unaware of it until he shaved his head for a movie. He also suffers from a condition called tinnitus in his right ear, which causes deafness in that ear.
6 Jennifer Garner – Overlapping pinky toe
The result of a condition called brachymetatarsia, Jennifer Garner has a shortened pinky toe, which is overlapped by another. The condition leads to one of the five toe bones to be shorter than the rest, making it easier for a neighbor to overlap it.
7 Ashton Kutcher – Webbed toes
The condition wherein an individual has webbed toes is called syndactyly, and affects approximately 1 of every 2500 infants that are born. Normally occurring between the second and third toes, syndactyly is amongst the most common hand and foot defects. At times, it is severe enough to require surgery. Ashton Kutcher is one celebrity who suffers from this condition.
8 Seal – Facial scars
Seal’s facial scars have generated a lot of interest among fans and, for a long time, the reason for their occurrence remained a mystery. It was only recently divulged that the scars are the result of discoid lupus – an autoimmune disease, which mainly affects an individual’s head and neck, leading to “butterfly rashes” on the neck and the nose. Seal was affected by the disease in his teens, although it usually affects people aged between 20 and 40.
9 Gemma Arterton – Extra fingers
Bond Girl Gemma Arterton suffers from a condition called polydactyly, which leads to an individual having extra fingers; Arterton had six fingers on each hand at birth, a boneless digit adjacent to both pinky fingers. Doctors tied of these extra digits, which later fell off, leaving behind only light scars.
10 Stephen Colbert – Ear defect
Stephen Colbert underwent a surgery at the age of 10 in order to get a tumor removed from his ear – a surgery that rendered him without an eardrum in his right ear.
