Scientists at the Parkes Observatory in Australia first detected perytons (short radio signals) in 1998, and they spent the next 17 years trying to figure out their cause and origin. The mystery was finally solved in 2015, when they found that the signals were caused by the premature opening of microwave oven doors at the facility.
