Juvenile spiny turtles have a rosy brown shell and "spines'' along the edges of the shell. The spines become worn and obscure with age. This unique appearance acts as the perfect camouflage against leaf litter. Although it is mainly a forest floor dweller, it sometimes forays to puddles and streams.
