Muscle Girls bar in Japan employs toned, muscular women to serve drinks with a smack. The quirky little bar is visited by people from around the globe to get slapped and experience the madness of Japan’s themed bars.

At Muscle Bar, patrons can pay approximately US $193 to get slapped or carried princess-style by waitresses.

Located in Tokyo’s entertainment district, Ikebukuro, Muscle Girls is the world’s first fitness-themed bar dedicated to women. Waitresses in the small and vibrant neon-pink bar have a rather unconventional job description—they are paid to slap their customers!

These muscular women, who are the bar’s main attraction, come from diverse fitness backgrounds, such as fitness influencers, professional wrestlers, and even Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners. Visitors are thrilled to see buffed waitresses working out on gym equipment, doing pull-ups and push-ups, and flexing their muscles.

Brave patrons can purchase “muscle coins” to request a slap, be carried princess-style, or even perch on a waitress’s shoulders while she performs squats. They can also watch as she crushes grapefruits with her bare hands to prepare cocktails.

The amount you pay for these physical services depends on your weight. And if you doubt their ability to handle you, a waitress weighing 50 kg can carry a 130 kg man, with charges going up to 30,000 yen or US $193.

Muscle Girls Bar is a haven for people who challenge the Japanese beauty standard of thin, frail women.

The buffed bar was established in 2020 by Hari, a former YouTube fitness influencer, following the closure of her gym due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the start, the bar struggled due to COVID-19 restrictions. But Hari tactfully used social media to spread the word and excite people to visit the unique bar.

The initial momentum in foot traffic came from TikTokers and YouTubers who filmed at the bar. It became a weekend favorite for Americans in the Navy after American TikToker, Patrick Smith, posted a video of his time at the bar. Then came the Japanese Twitch streamers who would stream at the bar. The management was quick to realize the reach and potential of these streams and started their own Twitch channel.

Today, Muscle Girls Bar is an international attraction. While the business may seem to cater to women-fitness enthusiasts, people also love it because it challenges Japan’s traditional beauty ideals. For a very long time, and still today, Japanese society often favors thin, delicate, and demure women as the standard of beauty. The girls of Muscle Girls Bar offer a refreshing alternative by flexing muscular, athletic female physiques.

While Muscle Girls does seem to attract people for its empowering atmosphere, some people simply find getting slapped a great stress reliever.
