This may seem like a fictional and unbelievable story, but it’s true. Canadian filmmaker Rob Spence, who lost his right eye in a childhood accident, is determined to replace it with a digital camera. His team, “Team Eyeborg,” has recently succeeded in fitting Spence with an artificial eye that contains a working LED, a step towards creating a synthetic eye with an integrated camera.

Spence and engineer Kosta Gramatis have successfully implanted a working red LED into Spence’s eye, giving him a look reminiscent of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s cyborg character in The Terminator. This camera will record everything within Spence’s field of vision and transmit the footage to a computer. The resulting video will offer a unique perspective on the increasing popularity of video surveillance in Western societies. An image displaying the components of the camera now present in his eye can be seen below.
