From 1854 to 1941, the London Necropolis Railway was used to transport dead bodies and mourners to Brookwood Cemetery in Surrey. Its Cemetery Station was specifically designed for the use of mourners and had private waiting rooms that could be used to hold funeral services. They were also equipped with lifts that could be manually operated or powered by steam to carry the coffins to the platform level.
