Between 1862 and 1863, a Philadelphia merchant and counterfeiter named Samuel Curtis Upham printed around $15 million worth of Confederate currency bills. The fake notes flooded the Confederate economy, but Upham could not be prosecuted as it was not illegal to counterfeit the currency of a country that was not recognized by the US.
