John Dee, Tudor polymath and occultist who was an advisor to Queen Elizabeth I, used an obsidian hand-mirror in an attempt to communicate with angels and apparitions. Scientists have now traced the spirit-mirror's origin to the Aztec Empire, which was founded nearly 600 years ago. The mirror is now housed at the British Museum in London.
