When the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami flooded his neighborhood and destroyed his home, Hideaki Akaiwa grabbed a wetsuit and swam over 600 feet and waded through underwater debris and hazards to rescue his wife and mother. But he did not stop there, he continued to look for more survivors for a week after the calamity.
