The human psychology is such that after a point of time anything that becomes repetitive or common tends to sound boring and the same goes with our regular movie theaters. Earlier there were single screen theaters which were later replaced by multiplexes. But even the multiplexes have become a common sight these days. Thankfully, Ole Scheeren, a German architect and principal of Büro Ole Scheeren with offices in Beijing, Hong Kong and London came up with a fresh new concept of a floating movie theater which left the audiences thrilled. He designed this theater in collaboration with the Film on the Rocks Yao Noi Foundation and finally set it up on Kudu Island in Thailand.
A floating screen was created using local lobster fisherman rafts with tires and then a separate platform for the audience was made so that they could sit back, relax and enjoy the show amidst the aesthetic scenery. The screen was placed in front of two beautiful rocks in the archipelago in the Bay of Bengal for a film festival called “Film on the Rocks Yao Noi.” After the film festival concluded, the rafts were given back to the fishermen and life as usual went on in the small villages of the region. It may be brought back for next year’s festival.(source)
“The thought of watching films here seemed surprising”, said Ole Scheeren. “A screen nestled somewhere between the rocks and the audience floating, hovering above the sea, somewhere in the middle of this incredible space of the lagoon, focused on the moving images across the water. A sense of temporality, randomness, almost like driftwood. Or maybe something more architectural. Modular pieces, loosely assembled like a group of little islands that congregate to form an auditorium.”These were the words used by him for describing the marvellous theater.(source)
The basic idea behind designing this floating theater was to ensure that the film festival existed on a different planet all together. The viewers had a cinematic experience, an experience that will be never forgotten by them in their entire lifetime. So if any of you wants to experience the joy of watching a movie in a floating theater located in the midst of a rocky and private shoreline, then next time do plan your vacation to this amazing island.
