New England settlers did not have enough money to paint their barns. So, they created a red, plastic-like coating using milk, lime, and red iron oxide to protect the wood. When mass-produced paint became available, the color red was the cheapest. So, it became popular among farmers. Thus, red-colored barns became a tradition.
