In the U.S., unscripted programs or "reality shows" are said to have gained prominence due to the 2007-08 Writers Guild of America strike. The strike affected much of the television industry and even halted many scripted productions. Many networks then turned to reality television to replace scripted shows, allowing them to expand as a genre.
