Did you know?
In 1962, Clarence Earl Gideon wrote a petition for “writ of certiorari” to the US Supreme Court from prison. He had been found guilty after being denied legal counsel under a Florida law that assigned no-cost attorneys only in death penalty cases. The landmark decision resulting from the petition stated that U.S. states must provide attorneys to criminal defendants who cannot afford one.
