The Chicago Tylenol Murders, a series of poisonous deaths started on 29 September 1982. The murders happened due to the consumption of Tylenol-branded acetaminophen capsules that had been laced with highly poisonous potassium cyanide. This poisonous murder spree started with a 12-year-old girl who showed symptoms like a sore throat and a runny nose after having a Tylenol capsule dose.

Her parents gave her one more Tylenol dose to cure her, not knowing that the capsule is laced with highly poisonous potassium cyanide. She died at 7 a.m. the same day which started a series of deaths. The same day, a 27-year-old man died due to cyanide poisoning which seemed to be a massive heart attack at first. The same man’s brother and sister consumed Tylenol due to headaches and died after a day or two.

A few days later, three strange deaths occurred, and all three of them consumed Tylenol before they died. These deaths started being identified and linked due to Tylenol poisoning. The Johnson & Johnson company that manufactured Tylenol issued a mass warning communications and called for a massive recall of the more than 31 million bottles of Tylenol in circulation.

The company assured that cyanide lacing occurred after Tylenol capsules had left the factory. Police suspected that the murderer had laced the Tylenol capsules with cyanide. Murderers had taken bottles from the shelves of local grocers and drug stores in the Chicago area.

After lacing the Tylenol with cyanide, the criminals returned the replaced the packages on the shelves to be purchased by the unknowing victims. After a thorough investigation, the perpetrators of these murders are still unknown and the case remains unsolved. (source)
