6. A considerable amount of Victoria’s Secret lingerie that exist in the world currently was made with prison labor.
Ask any women about their favorite lingerie brand, and most probably you would get a unanimous vote for Victoria’s Secret. But Victoria’s Secret has hidden a very dark secret for a long time. Its products are actually assembled, stitched, and packed by prisoners. They hire subcontractors who then hire jail inmates. Usually, prisoners are oblivious to exactly what they are making and for whom. The prisoners are exploited as they are paid a minimal amount for all the labor. The prisoners are not protected by any Fair labor law. Consequently, they cannot form a union, and so do not agitate against the unfair practice.(1,2)
7. 48% of the US soda fountain machines have coliform bacteria, a form of fecal contamination.
Hollins University conducted a study on 30 soda fountains in fast food restaurants from all over the United States. 90 beverages from these 30 fountains were tested. The results of the study indicated that 48% of sodas from these fountains are contaminated with coliform bacteria. This bacteria is a form of fecal contamination. The source of the bacteria is not clear as it may come from the soda fountains themselves or from the dirty hands of people.
Another bacteria, E. coli, was present in 11% of the tested beverages. In total, it is found that 20% of soda fountains has more than the maximum recommended levels of bacteria.(source)
8. The head of the penis is shaped so that it can scoop out rival’s cum out of the vagina.
Looking at human phallus, one might wonder about its peculiar shape i.e. the bulbous glans, commonly known as “head”. No other species has such distinctive mushroom-capped glans. When evolutionary scientists looked into the question, they found out that the most significant feature of the human penis is not the head. Rather, it’s the coronal ridge that forms underneath the glans.
After ejaculation, the sperm cells can survive in a woman’s cervix for several days. Within this time she may have more than one male sexual partner. So, nature sculpted male phallus in such a way that it can displace the semen of competitors from their partner’s vagina, thus reducing the competition. When the penis fully penetrates the vaginal tract, the coronal ridge draws other men’s sperm away from the cervix and back around the glans. In this way, it scoops out the semen deposited by a sexual rival maximizing the likelihood of its own paternity.(source)
9. Great White shark doesn’t actually like the taste of human. They attack human only to take a nibble to check out a potential prey item.
In 2016, there were 81 shark attacks worldwide. The numbers may look scary, but in reality, the number of people entering the water is a lot more than the number of people attacked.
Actually, sharks swim by people on the beach all the time, and they just decide not to eat people. Studies show they respond strongly to the smell of seals and fish, but not humans. That’s because sharks don’t like to eat people. But when they come in very close proximity to people their inquisitive nature comes into play. At such time, the human becomes their potential prey item, and they typically come up and have a nibble. However, when a 4 m long white shark takes a nibble on a person, it’s likely to be life threatening. If they don’t like the taste, then they just leave.(1,2)
10. If your meat is infected with the prion that causes Mad Cow Disease, cooking it well will not kill it and you will probably end up having a prion yourself after consuming it.
Commonly referred to as Mad Cow Disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a fatal disease. It affects the tonsil, brain, spinal cord and some parts of the central nervous system of adult cattle. In some cases, a part of small intestine and even the retina of the eyes of cattle are infected. When a person consumes these parts of an infected animal, he has a chance of contracting the disease-causing prion. Cooking doesn’t kill the prion, not even radiation can kill it.
