Hollins University conducted a study on 30 soda fountains in fast food restaurants from all over the United States. 90 beverages from these 30 fountains were tested. The results of the study indicated that 48% of sodas from these fountains are contaminated with coliform bacteria. This bacteria is a form of fecal contamination. The source of the bacteria is not clear as it may come from the soda fountains themselves or from the dirty hands of people.
Another bacteria, E. coli, was present in 11% of the tested beverages. In total, it is found that 20% of soda fountains has more than the maximum recommended levels of bacteria.(source)
