7. Synesthesia: overlapped senses.
Synesthesia is a phenomenon in which the affected person’s senses overlap each other. These people relate one of the senses with a totally different sense. For people affected by synesthesia, red color can be tangy while blue can be sweet by taste.
Synesthesia is a neurological phenomenon due to which a person relates different letters or numbers with different color, smell or taste. Due to synesthesia, when a particular sense is triggered(e.g. smell), the brain signals a completely different sense(e.g. taste). A person with synesthesia might say that number 1 does not taste good or the letter D is always yellow.
Most people who have synesthesia are completely unaware of their condition until they realize that others don’t experience things in the same way. Synesthetic people are more likely to participate in creative activities, and mostly they have a better memory than others. There is no valid proof as to how synesthesia develops in a person. But it had been suggested that it develops during the childhood.(1,2)
8. Cluster Headaches
Cluster Headache is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, severe headaches on one side of the head, typically around the eye. The pain due to cluster headaches has been described as ‘more painful than giving birth’.
In a cluster headache, the pain occurs on the one side of the head around the eyes. The eye on the affected side tears up and can even droop. The nose can get congested on the same side too. Cluster headaches last from half an hour to two hours. The name cluster headache comes from the pain that comes in groups or clusters. In one day, a person gets more than one attack of pain, and usually, such attacks occur on a daily basis.
9. Poland Syndrome
Poland Syndrome is a rare birth defect. It is characterized by underdevelopment or absence of the chest muscle on the one side of the body.
Poland syndrome usually affects the right side of one’s body. People suffering from Poland syndrome have no pectoralis muscle on the one side of the chest area. Also, the fingers of the hand on the same side of the body are webbed. Sometimes additional muscles in the chest wall, side, and shoulder are missing or underdeveloped. Due to this defect, a number of abnormalities can occur such as shortened ribs, breast and nipple abnormalities, and sparse underarm hair. Poland syndrome can be treated by a surgery. In the surgery, custom made implant is inserted in the affected region.(source)
10. Breast Hypertrophy
Breast Hypertrophy is a medical condition affecting the connective tissues of breasts due to which the tissues grow rapidly and the breast becomes excessively large.
Breast Hypertrophy is a rare medical condition which was first described scientifically in 1648. In this disorder, the breast of a woman shows extreme enlargement. The weight of each breast of the patient becomes more than 3% of the total body weight. It can affect one or both breasts. If it occurs in both breasts, then one of them becomes larger than the other making them asymmetric.(source)
11. Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome
Superior Canal Dehiscence syndrome is an abnormality due to which a person can hear their own pulse, heart beat, movement of eyeballs, and creaking joints.
Superior Canal Dehiscence syndrome is a rare medical condition affecting the inner ear. It causes hearing and balance symptoms in the patient, and some problems they experience because of this syndrome are hearing their own voice, breathe, and digestive noises. It can sometimes occur after physical trauma to the head. This abnormality occurs due to a thin temporal bone which encloses the middle and inner ear. It can be treated by surgically correcting the temporal bone.(source)
12. Persistent Genital Arousal Syndrome
Persistent Genital Arousal syndrome is a medical condition causing uncontrollable genital arousal with or without orgasm or genital engorgement.
Persistent Genital Arousal syndrome is also called restless genital syndrome. The genital arousal occurred due to this condition is not related to any sexual desire. It can occur in both men and women. The physical arousal due to this condition can be quite intense and lasts for weeks at a time. Orgasm provides temporary relief but the symptom returns after a few hours. Traveling by a vehicle or even the vibration of a phone can trigger this. Sometimes the discomfort becomes so intense that it can be downright painful.(source)
